Delivering Health: An Integrated Approach to Address Diabetes in the Context of Food Insecurity

Objective People with food insecurity experience type 2 diabetes (T2D) at higher rates than others while lacking the resources to manage disease. In order improve health of food-insecure individuals T2D, interventions must address nutrition multiple levels. Use Theory or Research Delivering Health utilizes healthy eating and active living lifestyle programs management for people T2D. Target Audience This program is designed help Arkansans T2D food-insecurity. Program Description The includes three levels: 12 weeks home delivery T2D-appropriate boxes adapted education materials T2D; dissemination (diabetes-friendly toolkit training) that support clients pantries in Arkansas; development an interprofessional course increase security assessments dietary patients. Evaluation Methods Biometric data, measures security, pantry utilization, history, medications, Summary Diabetes Self-Care Activities are gathered from individuals; survey data collected students. Results One hundred one have been recruited, 76 received a diabetes-friendly training, 123 profession students completed course. Pantry surveys show trainings increased ability most client health, over half use diabetes-related components, but few had implemented operational changes. training module has developed into continuing credit made available online. Conclusion Real-world constraints often limit willing implement changes when given support; availability limited, so some requested procuring food.
